Week 8 Growth Mindset: Becoming a Better Writer

(Tree growing out of a book)
In this class, I have been able to discover several of my strengths. I had always thought of myself as being a poor writer. I never thought that I had the creativity needed to write an interesting story. I use to always dread writing essays so I eventually equated that to writing stories. However, as the semester progressed and I wrote more and more stories, I was able to discover that I was actually a better writer than I gave myself credit for. I realized this from the many positive feedback that I received from my peers. Even though writing stories in this class is an assignment, I still found myself wanting to do it. I didn’t feel as if it hindered my willingness to write. I really like how Laura made the class a fun learning environment. The assignments don’t even seem like assignments. She also gives us more than enough chances for extra credit so that we have the opportunity to rest. This helps me a lot since for some weeks, my creativity would be quite low. I will continue to try and practice my writing skills as the semester progresses.

  1. I agree that this class has been a good opportunity to better develop our writing skills. It's not great that we're forced to do it, but sometimes that's necessary to force us to improve. I too have tried to use it as a possible moment for growth and improvement. Though I don't always have a good idea for a story, I still have enjoyed writing them quite a bit.

  2. I definitely agree that this class has helped make me a more confident writer, particularly in creative writing. The format is so great and the extra credit opportunities are perfect for me since my schedule is so busy this semester that I may not have time to work as much as I'd like on the projects. I'm glad that you're able to grow through this class and best of luck for the next half of the semester!

  3. I'm so glad you have gained confidence in your writing ability! I love reading your stories. I love this class because it doesn't actually feel like work because I enjoy the work that is due. I have missed creative writing so much since starting college so I am glad this course has provided us the opportunity to do more of it. Creative writing and essay writing is VERY different but I completely relate to your apprehension at the beginning of the semester. I forgot how much fun these stories are to write.

  4. That is so exciting that you had that realization. From the little bit of your pieces I did read I think you were a great writer and really kept the reader into it. I also hate writing essays but found this class interesting and found myself at the end really wanting to do the assignments! Good job!
